The brake is on the left

I was once given some very good advice about impulsiveness: the brake is on the left.

Acting or not acting on impulse is  a choice. Sometimes I try to convince myself that I have no choice, but I always do. As it pertains to my blog, applying the brakes might mean not hitting the Publish button before cleaning out the little jabs and insults that creep in to my writing. It might mean reading something carefully before I comment on it. It might mean not jumping to a conclusion about what’s going to happen just because I’d like it to.

So far, I’ve been talking about the small stuff of publishing a blog. I don’t think there is anything big going on here. I don’t think there’s a constitutional crisis. I don’t think there is any impending disaster to avert by just WAKING PEOPLE UP!

Some people, however, do see impending disaster. I’d like to remind those people that we have mechanisms to get leaders out of office: impeachment and election. The election is less than a year away. To anyone that feels that they have no choice, that they must engage in some extreme act, let me say that there are always choices, and that the brake is  on the left.

Wise words, Doc. I can’t resist noting that while the brake is on the left, the accelerator is on the right 😉

  2. G says:

    Good sage advice, Doc! 🙂

And in the clutch, some are more shifty than others.

  4. Lord Basil says:

The accelerator to socialist tyranny is actually on the left, and Barack Hussein Obama has had the pedal to the metal ever since he usurped to the office of POTUS.

But American patriots have caught on to his lies, and I predict he will be removed from enough ballots for the Democrat Party to urge him to resign, which he will.

If he doesn’t, and he somehow wins, I don’t see how this country can escape armed insurrection.

For myself, the brake is in the middle. My car has a manual transmission.

  6. G says:

Every day, you prove yourself to be just another angry blowhard spewing nothing but nonsense and bile and full of keyboard commando fantasies of sedition.

Just try something stupid like that and see how quickly your butt ends up behind bars.

Vile bile from a cranky keyboard commando spewing seditious stupidity.

Are you not getting adequate care from the Veterans Benefits Administration?

To what extreme act do you refer, Dr. C?

  10. JPotter says:

    Lord Basil: Lord Basil

What a crackup! Are you promising to round up the troops and take your place on the front lines?

  11. If the election were held today, Obama would win handily over any of the current Republican contenders.

But your remark is silly. There’s not going to be any armed insurrection. The country muddled along under Bush and it’s muddled along under Obama, all of your hyperbole notwithstanding.

Senator Graham, talking about birthers in particular, and the ridiculous things folks like you say, calls it “crazy.” You’re talking crazy, absolutely crazy.

Lord Haw Haw: If he doesn’t, and he somehow wins, I don’t see how this country can escape armed insurrection.

  12. One might cite several examples, the most extreme of which is James W. von Brunn.

    http://www.obamaconspiracy.org/2009/06/museum-guard-slain-by-white-supremacist-birther/

Less seriously, a number of birthers have been visited by the Secret Service after threatening the President (a federal crime).

Overall, I thought the 49ers played better, but they made those 2 key fumbles. The Pats game was a shame for the Ravens to lose on a missed field goal, but that’s life. I am looking forward to a rematch of what was almost certainly the best Super Bowl ever,

To all the denialists and faux-protesters out there who try to cry unfair for charges of racism or extremism… sorry, but the clear examples of such uglyness are blatent and fairly in the open these days.

Viletweets.com is just one good current snapshot to demonstrate how bad it has gotten out there, in terms of what people are willing to put in print and post for all the world to see. If this vile puke is what some people will openly post to the world, Imagine how much worse the language and statements are behind closed doors!

It is just sickening and shocking to see how common the N-word is being used in the open on twitter…and in direct reference to the President as well.

The amounts of other bigotry on display (anti-gay, anti-jew, anti-muslim) that seems to spew from these same folks shows that these aren’t random slips of the tongue – but true bigots with a deep fixation on their host of bigotries.

And the number of open statements calling for killing or mudering of people or assassination of the president or his family… UGH!

There is simply NO excuse for any of that. NONE at all.

So any Concern Troll trying to cry foul at memes of racism or violence – SPARE ME. The proof of direct racism, bigotry and death threats are quite pervasive and more and more appear every day. There is ZERO question that these are problems and key themes in what is happening here. It doesn’t make every person within a certain group racist… but it shows that the racism clearly is a problematic and real part of the equation in those groups…

one of my favorite examples comes from (where else?) freeperland:

Obama was our first affirmative action President. No serious background checks, no release of college transcripts, etc. You can’t criticize him because his is black.

He will be reelected (I will bet anyone on Freep) because the affirmative action mantra is drilled into our heads. Because he is black, Liberals will hold him to low, low, low standards. And same will the middle of the country. Perhaps not as big a victory as over McCain, but he will win nonetheless. We are terrified about what happens if we criticize a black.

Now, I am a conservative and have never uttered a racial comment in my life. Nor do I have any racial hatred or bigotry. Therefore, I can criticize Obama’s performance in the same light as Mark Levin.

I just have lost confidence in the American voter who are cowed about racism even when there is a good reason to vote against a President who just happens to be black.

and he calls himself “whitedog57” …

methinks “whitedog57” does not know what that word “racism” means. the self-deception just burns.

Saying something makes it true. Truthy, even. Works well in groupthink circles because you have to say something way out there to get called on it. Way, way out.

Prior, I thought “Lord Basil” was a parody. Now I’m not so sure. It’s getting harder to distinguish the two.

I love how the muppets, like Basil Fawlty here, seem to think only the RWNJ loons have access and efficacy with firearms for their fantasy of an “armed insurrection”.

Based on the well seen age and weight demographics of a typical Birfoon, the only thing I would be worried about would be having my foot run over by a platoon of “Hover-Rounds” or “Rascals”.

At most I would see them as very slow moving “Figure 11” targets

Did you not read the post that is 5 above yours?

  23. J. Potter says:

Lord Basil: I don’t see how this country can escape armed insurrection.

And i don’t either. Since countries only move at the sub-glacial pace of continetal drift, and insurrections (armed or otherwise) by definition start in their host country, even an insurrection rolling on hoverounds can easily catch the country, no matter which way it drifts.

Seems to me the only way for a country to escape an insurrection would be to start invading neighbors countries, blitzkrieg style, and possibly throwing some distractions behind itself to throw off the pursuit. You know, bread and circus type stuff: reality TV, tax credits for beer, homesteads in national parks, gov’t sponsored monster trucks, free live-fire air shows on basic cable, etc.

  24. The Magic M says:

Lord Basil: I predict he will be removed from enough ballots for the Democrat Party to urge him to resign, which he will.

If he doesn’t, and he somehow wins, I don’t see how this country can escape armed insurrection.

I suppose by “if he doesn’t”, you mean “if he doesn’t resign after being removed from enough ballots”, not “he will be removed from enough ballots”.

But then that’s a meaningless statement – as in “if it is revealed he is a space lizard, he will have to resign; if he doesn’t, we will have to invade the moon!”.

  25. nbc says:

    ROTFL… Sure Basil, sure…

  26. nbc says:

Lord Basil: The accelerator to socialist tyranny is actually on the left, and Barack Hussein Obama has had the pedal to the metal ever since he usurped to the office of POTUS.

There is no substantive argument that President Obama has been moving our Nation towards a socialist tyranny. Even the health insurance reform was based on conservative ideas… But he did manage to get the top of Al Qaeda caught or killed, and a needless war ended. If that is socialist tyranny…

  27. G says:

ODS has created a lot of examples of Poe’s Law in effect.

In real life, I use a lot more casual humor than I do when I come to forums like this. Because it is so hard to distinguish the real crazy from parody satire, I don’t wish to encourage the nuts that are out there.

Look at how some of the birther meme’s that keep popping up reference known (and clearly labelled) April Fool’s jokes from several years ago as their “proof”…. *sigh*

So I try to be careful to avoid any satirical parody when dealing with stuff like this… because the real and true crazy we are facing is sadly, more deranged than any parody can match… and parody satire just seems to go over the heads of the ODS crowd…and they buy into it as if it was serious and just incorporate it into their Cult mythology…

So yeah, lots’s of Poe’s Law & it’s Corrolary at play here constantly.

Lupin: Prior, I thought “Lord Basil” was a parody. Now I’m not so sure. It’s getting harder to distinguish the two.
