Repetition

If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.

Recognize this image?

Chances are that you do, given that it appears at the front of so many birther videos. Repetition is the best tool to get someone to remember something and to begin to think it’s truel

I’ve criticized the Obama Release Your Records web site for its aesthetics. They used up a great deal of precious page space with the same big image of Sheriff Arpaio on every story1. The purpose of a birther web site is to convince the reader of the birther position. Unsightly as it might be, those images and the repeated phrases like “100% forgery” are there for a purpose, and indeed given poll results, this propaganda technique has been quite effective.

The purpose of this web site is perhaps best summed up in our welcome statement:

Obama Conspiracy Theories since 2008 has been your destination for conspiracy theories and fringe views about Barack Obama. Having an argument with your buddies at the office? You’re in the right place.

Visitors here can keep up with the latest Obama Conspiracy Theory news find the primary sources quickly when they want to understand a claim or to build their own argument.

When you scan this page, you won’t see a boiler plate demeaning image of crazy sign-wielding birthers with hateful slogans or Mike Zullo in an off moment when he looks like he’s about to puke. I don’t use repetition to try to convince readers of anything.

1The latest version of ORYR viewed today has dropped the Arpaio images.

The ORYR website is probably the most convincing evidence of some very sick minds. The last thing that they are interested in is the TRUTH.

  2. Andrew Vrba, PmG says:

You’ll notice that many posters there just copy-pasta their same comments from previous articles. I think if they dropped the repeated posts, there’d be very little on the site, in the way of reader comments.

  3. I’m not at ORYR enough to notice.

You’ve never visited the weaselzippers site have you?

  5. Bob says:

Repetition is essential to Birther propaganda. They gave up using logic and/or evidence after the COLB was released in 2008.

  6. Same as the Orly Taitz site, but prettier.

    You’re not missing a lot.
I mainly go for new things to laugh at, but like I said, it’s mostly copy-pasta now.
The best laugh I had in a while there, was that nutter, who was having a meltdown that “Obots got away with” making fun of Zullo and pals. Man, that was stinking funny!

  8. JimmyJam says:

The birthers over there get all upset about thumbs down votes on their posts and they start accusing Obots and Anti-birthers of vast conspiracies. What is hilarious is that I haven’t seen more than about 25 up or down thumbs on ANY ORYR post.
Compare 66 million popular votes for Barack Obama to 25 thumbs down on a birther post!

I’ve never seen the weaselzippers site. Pretty crazy site ?

  10. I’ll say it again: Denialists are neo-Confederates and fascists.

Yes lots of racial nonsense too. I used to go there to nail the birther links only to get banned by the owner who then went back and forth with me in email where i destroyed his claims some more only to have him stop responding. Google it sometime it’s a nasty site

  12. The Magic M says:

    repeated phrases like “100% forgery”

You can see the obvious propaganda because it’s a tautology (what would be a “50% forgery”?).

Bob: They gave up using logic and/or evidence after the COLB was released in 2008.

The only fun birtherism still provides me is when they try to “prove” that *every single photograph* of Obama is a forgery (except the ones showing him “in Muslim garb” or among his Kenyan relatives, of course).

I couldn’t agree more. We have our own local brands of fascists here and it’s easy to spot them a mile away.

(Like right now, the French Right want to deny citizenship to children born of French soil from parents with undocumented status. Sounds familiar?)

I’m always surprised Americans who imagine they see communists under their bed & in the closets can’t see neo-nazis & fascists blatantly out in the open under they very noses.

Lupin: Like right now, the French Right want to deny citizenship to children born of French soil from parents with undocumented status. Sounds familiar?

When our German right-wingers were more popular, among their list of goals was to revoke the citizenship of everyone who ever was naturalized and their descendants (who were born German citizens) so only “pure” Germans (children of citizens who were themselves children of citizens etc.) would remain.
Right now, no right-wing party can get more than 3% of the vote, rendering them largely unimportant.

Lupin: I’m always surprised Americans who imagine they see communists under their bed & in the closets can’t see neo-nazis & fascists blatantly out in the open under they very noses.

Because fascism isn’t anathema to many of the wingnuts’ goals – be it “expel anyone who disagrees with me” or “Christian theocracy” or “every man for himself, let the poor die”.
Communism OTOH is the common enemy of the religious extremists as much as of the plain capitalists.
So being blind on one eye while seeing imaginary things with the other isn’t that uncommon (the same way die-hard left-wingers in Germany tend to see Nazis around every corner yet are blind to the fact that socialism/communism isn’t exactly a human rights fest either).
It’s another reason I tend to stay out of politics – it’s becoming too much of a boogeyman circus, and that’s just aggravating me.

I think it’s fun getting some of the stupid ones to pay attention to something they were unaware of. Take for instance the 1967 state department memo that birthers seem to be completely unaware of. They think about it for a second and then switch topics and fall back into their stupidity.

My personal favorite is the August 31, 1961 Immigration and Naturalization Service memo by INS Officer William Wood on the visa extension interview that he conducted with Barack Obama Senior.
The future President’s father acknowledges paternity and the Honolulu, Hawaii, USA birthplace of his son just 27 days after the birth.
What’s even more delicious is that the Woods’ memo is available on the birthers’ own worldnetdaily.com web site and it was released under a birther initiated Freedom of Information Act request.

  17. And it was entered into evidence by Powell’s attorney Mark Hatfield in the Farrar/Powell etc v. Obama case in Atlanta.

It just goes to show anytime birthers do any actual research they shoot themselves in the foot. Like say the birth announcements, race codes, 1967 state department memo etc.

Why would birthers not discard that as hearsay and lies? Seriously, of all the dozens of things that prove Hawaiian birth, that is the weakest one (maybe after that “Indonesian school registration” that has no paper trail).

LOL… when I read the title of this post, I thought you were talking about Obama’s repeated Obamacrash lie about keeping your insurance if you like it…. Period.

  24. dunstvangeet says:

    Sally HIll,

Obama has no control as to whether or not Insurance Companies will continue to offer the same plans or not. Are you suggesting that Obama should mandate that Insurance Companies continue to offer plans that they don’t want to? That sounds like governmental interferrance into Healthcare to me…
