“Stoning homos” is not still the law

Our much discussed Pastor James David Manning put the sign above in front of his Harlem church. As one Christian to another, I reprove Pastor Manning for his error.

The history of the early church is told in the in the Bible’s Book of “The Acts of the Apostles,” believed to have been authored by St. Luke as a “part 2” of the “Gospel of Luke.” The book talks about the introduction of non-Jewish members into the Christian community and deals with the question of whether one had to be Jewish and follow the laws in the Hebrew scriptures in order to be a Christian. The debate is recounted in the 15th Chapter of Acts. Here is part of the conclusion:

For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay on you no greater burden than these requirements: that you abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what has been strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell."
(ESV) Act 15:28-29

Now while sexual immorality (whatever that means) is prohibited, the rest of the burden of the Law of Moses, including any requirements for stoning anyone, were no longer binding on non-Jewish Christians.

It is rather ironic that Manning cites John’s Gospel, Chapter 81, on his sign because in that text Jesus intervenes to stop a stoning:

Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such [adulterous] women. So what do you say?" …  And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, "Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her." And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up and said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more."
(ESV) Jn 8:5-11

The self-righteous folks even tried to stone Jesus:

The Jews picked up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, "I have shown you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you going to stone me?"
(ESV) Jn 10:31-32

In this season of Lent, let us strive to forgive the wayward ones like Pastor Manning.

1The oldest manuscripts of John’s Gospel do not contain this particular text. It is believed that it was part of a separate tradition, later added.

I set before you a choice

In 2009, the United States Congress declared September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Only about 30% of Americans are aware of this national day, but I hope that by the end of the decade most will know of it. All across the country today, volunteers are engaged in a range of community and personal good deeds. The article’s title was suggested by a text from the Hebrew Scriptures, read last Sunday in many churches:

See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil.

— Deuteronomy 30:16 ESV

Doing good is a choice and I support the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. My particular good deeds for today (so far) are to publicize public service in this article, and  to recycle a bunch of cardboard and plastic discarded at an event. Later today I plan to photograph a new national historical site for the Wikipedia “We Love Monuments” project. There are so many possibilities.

  • Plant a tree
  • Read to children
  • Donate unused items to charity
  • Recycle
  • Visit someone who doesn’t get many visitors
  • Open a door for someone with their hands full
  • Improve an article at the Wikipedia
  • Build a Habitat house
  • Volunteer to help seniors with their tax forms

Birthers, will you continue to waste your energy in a hopeless cause, or will you raise up your heads and see the good that you could be doing? I set before you a choice. Choose life.

Bible says: “Obama not eligible”

We talked a little about Herb Titus, a lawyer who made a recent video saying Barack Obama is not eligible to be President. His argument was based along the lines of natural philosophy. However, I learned that his real objection comes from the 17th chapter of the Bible’s book of Deuteronomy. The passage goes:

15you shall surely set a king over you whom the LORD your God chooses, one from among your countrymen you shall set as king over yourselves; you may not put a foreigner over yourselves who is not your countryman.

According to Religion Dispatches magazine, Titus has been pushing this concept since 2009.

Information crimes

In their continuing campaign to undermine American freedom and our way of life, information criminals at World Net Daily have published a remarkably misleading and false article titled:

Hawaiian newspapers don’t prove birthplace:
Announcements published in 1961 not solid evidence of U.S. location

We know that State Department of Health spokesperson, Janice Okubo said quite plainly: “Such vital statistics, however, were not sent to the newspapers by the general public but by the Health Department, which received the information directly from hospitals, Okubo said.”

The WND article is rather like a magicians misdirection. Saying something true and then immediately restating or reinterpreting it falsely or pulling things out of context.  Anyone who has any sense knows that Barack Obama was conclusively born in Hawaii. The State Department of Health said so. What WND is trying to do is to stir the pot, create discontent, raise anxiety, and trick its readers into believing something that is not true. World Net Daily is raping the minds of its readers.

WorldNetDaily has a tag line that says: “A free press for a free people”. Decent people know that is the truth that makes us free. By that reason, WorldNetDaily, purveyor of lies and the sewer of journalism,  is actually trying to take away American liberty and make a free people into slaves.

Take heed:

(Rev 21:8 NRSV)  But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the polluted, the murderers, the fornicators, the sorcerers, the idolaters, and all liars, their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur …
