Soon

A commenter pointed me to a message from Carl Gallups on Facebook, posted just a few hours ago:

We spoke with Carl Gallups. Here is what he told us concerning this matter:

"I have spoken at length with Mike Zullo. He says that he and the sheriff are still proceeding with the investigation and their plans to release the information. They believe it will be soon. HOWEVER, as reported before – they have been involved in jumping some huge legal hurdles that will enable them to bring this info forward. They are still involved in one big legal hurdle now. They hope to have it resolved soon. Any major movement in the case coming forward will be announced on Freedom Friday with Carl Gallups (carlgallups.com) and on the PNN internet network."

Gallups later posted at 5 PM that Zullo would be on the show at 5 PM. You COULD have given a little advance notice, Carl. So that will be something to listen to.1

What Gallups said about legal hurdles is a reprise of what he’d said half a year ago (except for the “s” word):

Carl Gallups: Been talking to Mike Zullo. Both the birth certificate and criminal investigations are still ongoing. Sheriff Arpaio is getting close to holding the press conference. They are in the process of getting over two legal hurdles so they can release some of the information. All sources and information must be extensively vetted.

For the boy who cried “wolf!” one too many times, the word lost its meaning through misuse. The same might be said of the word “soon” coming from Mike Zullo and Carl Gallups. My favorite example comes from February 7, 2014:

Gallups: You’re guys are confirming that you are very, very sure, very sure you know who several of these people are. …

Zullo: Yada, Yada, Yada. … This is going to be their play: deny, deny, deny.

Gallups: Right, but, but, they’re lying, lying, lying because you’ve got the goods, right?

Zullo: I’ve got the proof, proof, proof.

Gallups: OK, good. And the whole world is gonna see it, see it, see it, real soon.

In a video posted in May 2014 (and subsequently deleted) Gallups said:

So, we’ll know soon exactly what’s going to happen. In the mean time, from time to time Mike Zullo and I will give updates so that you will know that it’s still in the works, and still going to happen. God bless you.

We all remember the expectations of a “March reveal” in 2014, but even then birthers, like Mark Gillar, were prepared to give the Cold Case Posse a little breathing room:

… Don’t focus on a timeline. As far as I’m concerned as long as it breaks by summer and impacts the 2014 midterms, I’ll be happy.

Was 2014 the year of “soon”?

No, it started way before that. This is from Gallups January 2013:

PPS has been in direct contact with the Sheriff Arpaio investigation. We have just again been assured by Lt. Mike Zullo lead investigator that the investigation and potential angles of prosecution are still going full steam ahead. Just because it’s not in the news right now does not mean they are not feverishly working on the matter. There could be some big announcements in the case soon and forthcoming.

1We would be better able to track the delays if we had transcripts of the Gallups/Zullo segments. I made a few partial transcripts of them for articles, and I will continue to do that. Zullo has been on many times.

DARPA

I really haven’t covered the silly notion that Obots work for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), you know the guys who helped Al Gore invent the Internet. So where did this notion come from?

It appears to have originated with a Mike Zullo appearance on the Carl Gallups Freedom Friday radio show on February 7, 2014.

Gallups: Obots, we know that there are operatives out there—Obama-loving operatives. That’s OK to love Obama; that’s fine, but these people have interjected themselves all throughout this investigation in various ways, some to the point of actually, I think, interfering with the investigation, but they’ve interjected themselves on radio and the Internet, Blogtalk Radio, my radio program and all over the blogs and web sites, but isn’t it correct, my understanding that you know who some or most of these guys are, the most important ones, I mean have you done some digging? You know who those guys are?

Zullo: We have a pretty good idea of who some of the ones who are anonymous are. One we know works in the field of artificial intelligence in projects that are funded by DARPA. That tells you a lot right there. We have traced IP addresses going directly back to the Administration.

Despite that exchange, and opening the show with a lengthy segment on Obots, Gallups repeats over and over that the Obots are “irrelevant.” Then remarkably, Zullo and Gallups credit the Obots for the Xerox 7655 story, which they said pointed the investigation towards some “deep, deep, deep stuff.”

The show then got a little silly:

Gallups: You’re guys are confirming that you are very, very sure, very sure you know who several of these people are. …

Zullo: Yada, Yada, Yada. … This is going to be their play: deny, deny, deny.

Gallups: Right, but, but, they’re lying, lying, lying because you’ve got the goods, right?

Zullo: I’ve got the proof, proof, proof.

Gallups: OK, good. And the whole world is gonna see it, see it, see it, real soon.

Of course, the world didn’t see anything, and Zullo just kept pushing the date out for his universe-shattering revelations.  Zullo never named his DARPA Obot, or even said the Obot actually works for DARPA. Continue Reading →

Missing comments

This happens to me a lot. I have alerts set on some web sites, including Gerbil Report™, that send me an email when someone replies to a comment I made. It’s not unusual for the comment to disappear before I can reply to it. Here’s an example where I was replying to bluecat6 who had claimed that the FactCheck.org images of Obama’s birth certificate were coordinated with their release on the Daily KOS and FightTheSmears.com (all within a 2-day period), and that artifacts proved that document a fake:

Dr. Conspiracy – How are you competent to say what artifacts are normal and which indicate forgery? The short answer is that you, and all of your birther kin, are not.

This is why birtherism has not made any difference. You’re wrong.

You are also wrong about the date when the document was published at FactCheck. It was August 211, not June 13. So rather than FactCheck coordinating with the release, it was responding months later to the criticism.

Now here’s the deleted response:

TrumpetsBlowing – To Kevin Wayne Davidson : you wanna know how you got caught, genius? You’re insane. You made mistakes. And best of all, we have the dna now. CHECKMATE

Obviously, I would want clarification of exactly what I got caught at, and who had whose DNA. Oh well. I couldn’t find “TrumpetsBlowing” as a commenter anywhere on the Internet. Thematically, the name is current for Pastor Carl Gallups, who posted at the PPSIMMONS web site on December 20:

and this theme is featured on the cover of Gallups new book, “Final Warning.”

Could the comment have been made by Gallups himself? That would certainly make sense given its retraction. Gallups sometimes is a bit of a loose canon.

1I was actually mistaken here, citing the date where FactCheck’s own images were published. FactCheck actually referenced the certificate and image released by the Obama Campaign on June 16 (still not the 13th), sufficient time to be responding to the release, rather than coordinating with it.

Turning dark

Mike Zullo spoke to the Surprise Arizona Tea Party Patriots November 18, and according to interviewer Sharon Rondeau of the Post & Email:

Zullo “said that the investigation that they started ‘turned very dark,’ whatever ‘dark’ means,” the individual added.

Indeed, what does that mean?

Here’s a quotation from the Associated Press just today:

A detective investigating the high school shooting in Washington state that left five teens dead says in court papers that the young shooter’s texts turned dark the week before he opened fire, with references to his funeral and the message: “Bang bang I’m dead.”

Writing in the American Journal of Forensic Psychiatry (2007) we see something similar in the Columbine school shooting:

Three days after his arrest, Klebold made one of his few entries into his diary. He wrote about his love for a female student and wondered if the feelings were mutual. But the note turned dark. He talked about suicide, blowing himself up with a bomb strapped to his neck.

I certainly hope that there is not some kind of murder-suicide pact about to be acted out by the Cold Case Posse!

Barry Cooper, a former drug enforcement officer said:

In fact, governments have always turned dark and corrupt which has always led to mass suffering.

Certainly there are suspicions of corruption in the Cold Case Posse, and they have clearly lied to the public about evidence. Still, I find it unlikely that Mike Zullo would be admitting this to his Tea Party audience.

Turning dark can be a sign of illness. In a chilling true story titled “Biohazard,” author Ken Alibek discusses a case of the Marburg virus:

By the fifteenth day, the tiny bruises on Ustinov’s body had turned dark blue, and his skin was as thin as parchment. The blood pooling underneath began oozing through. It streamed from his nose, mouth, and genitals.

Enough of that. Generally “turning dark” refers to reduction in light, nightfall, or a scene being obscured by smoke. It’s also associated with the end of an activity, such as a company going out of business (turning out the lights). A blog goes dark when it disappears from the web. “Going dark” in police jargon can refer to the failure of an investigation due to lack of evidence and leads. FBI Director James B. Comey spoke last month at the Brookings Institution of the conflicts between the need for privacy and criminal investigation:

Unfortunately, the law hasn’t kept pace with technology, and this disconnect has created a significant public safety problem. We call it “Going Dark,” and what it means is this: Those charged with protecting our people aren’t always able to access the evidence we need to prosecute crime and prevent terrorism even with lawful authority. We have the legal authority to intercept and access communications and information pursuant to court order, but we often lack the technical ability to do so.

It probably makes more sense to view the comment in some kind of context, and a commenter here reminded us of this quote from Carl Gallups 22 November 2013:

…the investigation has gone “deeper and darker” than they ever imagined…

I think that what Zullo intended was that his audience assume that the Cold Case Posse had uncovered some great evil in its investigation, but in fact to say nothing. Even back to the early Cold Case Posse press conferences, Zullo proved himself a master at leaving his audience thinking he said things he didn’t actually say. So as far as I am concerned, “turned dark” coming from Mike Zullo means exactly nothing.

I want to give credit to the Tea Party member who spoke to Rondeau. He didn’t jump to any conclusion about what Mike Zullo meant. I also want to credit Rondeau who, no matter what one thinks about her slant on things, does an outstanding job of getting birther stories.

Zullo responds, maybe, someday

So we’ve been waiting for a very long time for a very long list of things promised by Mike Zullo. Now, via Carl Gallups on Facebook, we have something else to wait for:

INFORMATION COMING HERE on the CBS-5 NEWS EXPOSE (Hit Piece) on Mike Zullo, Sheriff Arpaio, and the Cold-Case Posse. Carl Gallups will have quotes and comments from Mike Zullo to contribute to the information.

STAND BY.

You use that word “information,” but don’t think it means what you think it does.

The gift that keeps on sucking

So Mike Zullo is exposed as a liar who took money from one of the sources in his investigation. That’s bad for Zullo, right? No, it was a gift. This comment appeared on Gerbil Report™ from “sho”:

CBS may have just given a gift to Zullo / Team Arpaio.

You can follow the link if you’re interesting in the tortured explanation that follows. I tried to summarize it, but just couldn’t find anything to say that made sense.

This “gift” concept seems to be the birthers’ latest approach to making lemons into lemonade, and snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. We saw the same from Carl Gallups when he addressed Brian Reilly’s damning revelations:

We have been monitoring him for the last eight months, and on that broadcast, Mr. Reilly gave me a gift:  we have been waiting for him to come off of an internet broadcast and finally do the slanderous hit-job that he did on public airwaves.

Describing the total discrediting of all the birther birth certificate image forgery claims through replication of their “anomalies” in a real scan using a Xerox machine Mark Gillar said in a comment:

Finally, the Xerox 7655 has been a gift. Giving the CCP the ability to determine exactly which anomalies were and were not produced by the Xerox 7655 has been a blessing.
