Cole is now facing federal charges in the shooting incident. The state charges have been dismissed.
Authorities, according to The Modesto Bee and other sources, have identified the man who is suspected of shooting a California Highway Patrol officer and a Bureau of Land Management ranger at a Nevada County, California, campground last Saturday, as Brent Douglas Cole. Cole, 60, was himself wounded in the confrontation and is in stable condition.
