Who can hear a dog whistle?

imageNormal human beings don’t hear dog whistles, as they are designed for dogs. One wonders what that says about Rush Limbaugh, who recently said:

This sovereignty business, this is significant. This is not a throwaway. That’s a dog whistle.

Now I have tinnitus, so I hear dog whistles all the time, but I learned long ago the difference between the whistles in my head and the real thing—Limbaugh not so much. He latched onto a remark by the President where Obama said:

Some Mexicans think that America disrespects Mexico, or thinks that America is trying to impose itself on Mexican sovereignty or just wants to wall ourselves off.

Rush hears Obama saying in a coded message directed at Latinos that he believes that parts of the US Southwest really belong to Mexico, specifically Limbaugh said:

…he’s telling them that he agrees with them that California should still be Mexico and that New Mexico should still be Mexico.

Personally, I don’t believe that Limbaugh is that stupid, but is just saying what he things will boost his ratings. Pathetic.

sticking with the dog whistle line, “Pat Buchanan Claims Immigration Reform, Latino Voting Will Lead to ‘Erasure of the Southern Border'”

    On Friday’s McLaughlin Group:

“Let me tell you, if you get amnesty and the path to citizenship that the Mexican president wants, that will lead to the erasure of the southern border of the United States, because the Hispanic population in all those border states is going to be decisive in elections and they will begin to demand that to people, shut up about immigration and let it come forward, and when that happens you’re going to have an entirely different U.S.A.,” he said.

I think Rush spouts most of his guff for that noblest of purposes…to get attention and higher ratings. He knows he’s full of it, but he’s rolling in dough and attention from it.

  4. richCares says:

Years ago in Hawaii, A neighbor was a huge Rush fan, when Rush made fun of Clinton’s daughter being ugly it hit him hard, his daughter had a face deformity and was often made fun of. He stopped listening to Rush, which improved his life, can you imagine the weight of all that hate is now being gone. Wouldn’t it be nice of that to happen to nasty Orly.

  5. Bob says:

My sister and brother-in-law started listening to Limbaugh about 10 years ago and have gone from being normal people to angry RWNJs whom I’m now uncomfortable to be around. It’s even affected their once great relationship with their son who married a lovely woman who works for the EPA. Their voices drip with contempt every time they ask her about her job.

  6. Birther Weary says:

Yeah, actually Limbaugh is that stupid. He didn’t used to be 20 years ago, but all that comes out of his mouth now is fear, hate, and stupid cubed.

  7. donna says:

    Bob:

you might be interested in “Fox Geezer Syndrome” written by a conservative about conservatives

“Conor Friedersdorf remembers what a pain it was to live with a liberal roommate who watched Keith Olbermann every night, and would subsequently sulk around in a pissed-off mood. Friedersdorf too got a negative contact buzz from the show. He writes: “It seems to me that Olbermann’s show often brought out the worst impulses in people: petulance, self-righteousness, and blind anger at ‘the other side.’”

“Sounds familiar to me, though from the other side. Except in my case, it’s not my liberal roommate. It’s my conservative parents – and maybe yours too.”

Doesn’t make him stupid. Instead, what he puts out over the air is rational when considered from the viewpoint of Rushbo’s greatest innermost desires. Throwing raw meat to folks who would rather not entertain any thoughts contrary to their deeply ingrained prejudices has made him rich. It also brings him their adulation. And since being rich and revered (by some) is for him a far greater virtue than being intellectually honest, keeping on keeping on will continue to be his mode of operation.

One station manager quipped to me, “The median age of Limbaugh’s audience? Deceased.”

    –David Frum

Which reminds me tangentially of an early The Simpsons quote, when Marge is commissioned to paint a portrait of Mr. Burns, and finally turns in a very horrifying nude. One art critic brightly responds to her portrayal:

He’s bad, but he’ll die. So I like it!

And roaming even further: Margaret Groening, father to Matt (and Maggie and Lisa — and Patty, who is said to have “reeked of cigarette smoke”), husband to Homer, passed away recently.

    Her maiden name: Wiggum.

That’s a great article, thank you. Yeah it makes sense that if you are just filling your head with poison the whole time, you are going to get sick. That’s pretty much whats happened to political discourse. Its also whats happened with Birthers and other conspiracy theorists I suppose. They are so sick now they are blind.

Rush is very clever. But he shares the far-right contempt for women, which I suspect also explains his serial marriages (each younger than the last, I think) and his Viagra-fuelled trip to Costa Rica or wherever it was when he got busted at US customs, despite priofessing to be a paid-up member of the family values crowd.

  15. scott e says:

rush has been telling it like it is for a generation, he is so good at what he does that some folks equate him with being a leader of “we the conservatives”.

but I guess he’s not from around here, is he? now he seems to have other blog people nipping at his heels. he is a giant and a legend, and a pretty nice guy too. just saying…

Rush has been a great showman as has managed to keep the right from being too successful. All in all, he has done a lot of good for our nation through his actions. But his ignorance of issues of science, and his pandering to the dark side, certainly indict him.

the right has been successful since rush came along… sometimes. i’m pretty sure 3/5ths of our governors are from the right. right ? the bushes ? nobody on the right has ever been impeached as far as I remember, since rush stepped up to the mic. I think conservative radio is more popular than those of the left too. I think the left may take a hit tomorrow on the hill as well. the supreme court ? the house of representatives… ? the success of red states versus blue ? migration from california to texas ? i’m not making this up.

As usual Scotty doesn’t understand the world he lives in. So why not help out in Darfur or any other country with an oppressive tyrant? Why would one blame Clinton for 911 when he was the first president taking real action against terrorists while George W. Bush destroyed our counter terrorism program before 9/11. Also we did have complicity giving Saddam WMDs during the Reagan years. As for your bit about it being a good idea. because his administration is current, most presidents study history, including the one we have now. it was a reply to a comment about the second war in Iraq. I maintain that saddam Hussein was a threat to the world, he put out an order to hunt down and kill Americans and a call for 100 suicide bombers. I believe saddam was a monster, and i’m glad he’s dead, that Iraq has a chance now, they didn’t have before.

    scott e:

Which is why George H W Bush didn’t do it in Gulf war I. Ever wonder why?

    there were wmd’s .

Here we see evidence that FOX veiwers are the least informed on issues. No there were not WMDs. Bush had teams scouring Iraq for a year after the war and they found nothing. It was so pathetic that the head of the teams scouring Iraq resigned after 4 months because he said it was a waste of time, there was nothing there.

Not only that but There were 600 metric Tonnes of Yellowcake Uranium sitting 10 miles from Baghdad that hadn’t been touched since 1990. And Bush was making out that Saddam was trying to buy Yellowcake from Uganda to make NUKES!!!

chemicals used to kill innocent children. rape rooms (the harmony report),

Yep that really changed after the war. See Abu Ghraib and Gitmo. And white phosphorous and 2000 pound bombs used on cities.

he will never hurt anyone again, which is more than I can say for 0bama. but I mean that in a nice way, let’s see what happens tomorrow on the hill.

Nothing is going to happen today on the hill and you know it. This is just a manufactured controversy to try and taint Hillary Clinton. Everyone involved has been adamant that everything possible was done, and its such unbelievable garbage that only the most gullible Obama hater buys it

incidentally, when I ask a friend about Iraq using chemicals on the kurds, was the first time I heard that expression “but that was a long time ago”…

LOL. When Vice President George H W Bush was shown photos of the chemical attacks by our friend Saddam using the chemicals we sold him, he said they were fakes. Sound familiar?

Oh yeah, and if the Kurds hated Saddam so much, how come they asked him to intervene in their civil war around 1995? Yes, they ASKED Saddam with his tanks to roll in. If you don’t believe me look it up. Might cause some dissonance in your uninformed braincell.

People have to recognize that Rush and his ilk are not journalists or even pundits, they are entertainers and nothing more. Bob Grant did the same thing in NY for years before anyone ever head of Rush Limbaugh. I actually don’t listen to many of the liberal talking heads, but the couple of times that I have heard Stephanie Miller, it was obvious that she was a comedian. No doubt that she makes fun of people, I watched a video of her interviewing Taitz. But Taitz either had no idea or did not care that she was being mocked openly. I get the distinct impression that Miller likes to take people who take themselves too seriously and knock them down a peg or two, but I don’t know enough about her work to say that for sure. The RWNJs, who have no sense of humor, are perfect targets for her.

As to Rush, I used to listen now and then and I CAN say this with certainty. I have fact checked several things he said and I have never found him to be right on his facts. To be clear, I am not saying that I fact checked everything I heard, only those things that he said that I found difficult to believe and he was never right.

Case in point, he claimed that the melting of the southern polar ice cap could not affect the level of water in the ocean because when ice melts it can only replace the amount of water that it displaces. The southern polar ice cap sits on top of land mass and it is not displacing any water. That one always stuck with me.

That’s funny, when the evidence for all those misleading claims was put before a court in Merry old England, the court only found 3 of the hundreds of claims of misleading information were actually valid.

  88. JRC says:

This is the scott e on global warming. First off, population is an important issue to the scientists. The idea that when the Earth heats up and we have drought and flooding in areas that destroy crops in areas where the majority of our food comes is just basic. So can the world support a growing population when yields drop? Scientists do discuss, study, and research population relating to climate change. As for your people argument with increased CO2 and methane, I’m guessing you are speaking of us breathing, and farting? That is like the tired argument about increased cattle production. You have to understand there is natural CO2 cycle which has been fairly balanced for the last 100,000 years or more. The problem is with the natural cycle. It’s with releasing millions of years of naturally sequestered C into the atmosphere within a period of less than 200 years. Just an example that I hope makes my point, though not perfectly. Think of a dam like Hoover as nature holding back sequestered C. It rains, and some water may run over the dam. As long as the dam is in place things stay fairly steady. But if the dam breaks and all of that is released in a short period of time everything in the path will be destroyed.

  89. JRC says:

I meant to type the problem isn’t with the natural cycle. It’s with releasing millions (probably billions of years)

I am really pretty much a silent pessimist when it comes to global warming.

To me it has always been fairly straight forward- one of two things:

    a) Either human activities are causing global warming or
    b) They are not.

If a is true- and we get it wrong(like we are now) then our very civilization, possibly the existance of human kind could come to the end.

If b is true- well then we may have wasted sometime.

I think gambling that the science is wrong, when if the science is correct my children or grandchildren may be suffering the end of our world, is a fools bet.

But the anti-global warming forces are zealots. And frankly I don’t know understand why other than being anti-science.

    Methane clathrate

    See also

A changing Gulf Stream off the East Coast has destabilized frozen methane deposits trapped under nearly 4,000 square miles of seafloor, scientists reported Wednesday. And since methane is even more potent than carbon dioxide as a global warming gas, the researchers said, any large-scale release could have significant climate impacts.

    and

Using seismic records and ocean models, the team estimated that 2.5 gigatonnes of frozen methane hydrate are being destabilized and could separate into methane gas and water.

    nbc: Methane clathrate

Huh. OK, hadn’t seen that one. Further link following reveals that ‘they’ are finding quite a few different clathrate reservoirs, in lakes, oceans, and wet meadows – and they are all under threat.

People need to start worrying about methane, real quick. Its called tipping points folk. Controlling the CO2 (which the world is NOT doing) will slow down the ACC that has been accounted for. Almost no-one has accounted for the methane that will be produced by a 1 degree change or a 2 degree change because we don’t know all the sources.

So if we are happy to live with the 1 degree of change cause by x amount of CO2, that is just too bad, because that will affect the methane too and cause even more change.

Like I said, once you start melting the permafrost and releasing the trapped methane, you are trying to stop a runaway train.

Other discussions: Arctic methane release and Methane bursts from frozen tundra and really check out the video in this one: An Arctic Climate Catastrophe?.

We estimate that 10 times the amount of methane that is in the atmosphere will come out of these lakes.

Good point. Researchers in January 2006, I believe, looked into how the brain functioned when provided unpalatable information. Typically, the brain’s owner would take a few moments to deal with the unwelcome incoming, and when he or she had sufficiently rationalized the impact away, the brain would shoot itself a feel-good chemical.
