New video on Obama’s parentage

Continuing the joke/bizarre theme for October, this YouTube video makes the claim that President Obama is the son of Stanley Dunham (Obama’s grandfather) and Zeituni Onyango (Barack Obama Sr.’s half sister). You can’t make this stuff up.

“Don’t drag my child into this,” Zeituni Onyango said in her first interview since she was granted asylum in May, apparently referring to Obama.

The New York Daily News

Onyango, now age 58, would have been about 9 years old when President Obama was born.

I’m guessing that the Obama campaign quote snippet had an introductory remark that indicated that he was repeating a story that someone told him?

Something like “Joe Blogs told be about his father saying uh uh uh ‘My father served in WWII…

Close relatives, especially Aunts, often call their nieces and nephews ‘my child’ especially when the actual parents are no longer around. They are sort of taking up a surrogate parent role.

Nothing to see here folks. Move on.

  2. Flipper says:

In the orignial video, we don’t actually get to hear the *question* she responded to – the video cuts away, whether to save time or deliberately plant a birther seed. I suspect the latter.

It’s simply assumed by the YT video maker that the unheard question (and therefore the answer) refers to President Obama.

To me, a more likely explanation is that the interviewer asked her a question about one of her *own* children. I can’t find any info about her children, but they merit a brief reference in a Huffpo article describing her apartment as being:

“adorned with photographs of her with Obama at the Illinois Statehouse, the president’s official portrait, his family, the inauguration, her children and African wildlife”.

  4. DaveH says:

As far as the ‘My father’ part – it’s hard to tell but it could have been edited and he actually used ‘My grand-father’. However, you can’t dismiss the fact that Obama lived with his grandparents and it is likely he considered his grand father his father and quite possibly thinks of him as ‘his father’.

I know kids that were left with their grandparents to be raised and called them mom and dad.

But there’s nothing like a deep dark conspiracy. Ohhhhhhhhh!!!!!

sponson: GOP Congressional candidate calls for impeachment power in order to “force” Obama to show his birth certificate.

In my capacity as a US citizen, I am dismayed at the fact that there is a strong chance that Michigan’s 7th district will be held by someone who is unwilling to acknowledge that Obama “resolved” the matter of the location of his birth some time ago.

However, in my capacity as a Democrat, I feel slightly pleased by the fact that the Republican candidate has just reduced somewhat the chances that the GOP will win MI-7.

  8. Dr Kenneth Noisewater (Bob Ross) says:

sponson: GOP Congressional candidate calls for impeachment power in order to “force” Obama to show his birth certificate.

I love his “solution” though. To have ranking members of both parties and a justice to be shown it. So then once they get shown it the birthers still will make up a reason for not believing it

  9. HellT says:

sponson: GOP Congressional candidate calls for impeachment power in order to “force” Obama to show his birth certificate.

The New Republic has an article online titled “Scandal TBD: The Coming Impeachment of Barack Obama”. The first paragraph of the article:

“Hear me now and believe me later: If Republicans win and maintain control of the House of Representatives, they are going to impeach President Obama. They won’t do it right away. And they won’t succeed in removing Obama. (You need 67 Senate votes.) But if Obama wins a second term, the House will vote to impeach him before he leaves office.”

Because that’s how Republicans play the game. It has nothing to do with law; it has everything to do with politics. They don’t believe in compromising with their opponents, they believe in destroying them. The birther conspiracy crap has been a great way for them to stir up their base and get them convinced that there must be some justification for politically destroying Obama.

  10. sfjeff says:

“Because that’s how Republicans play the game. It has nothing to do with law; it has everything to do with politics”

I actually believe this is likely to happen. I also predict that if it does, the Democrats will do the same thing the next time they have a majority in the House and a Republican President.

The impeachment process will become nothing more than another aspect of politics as usual- which is an insult to the Constitution and our country

I wonder if this all goes back to Richard Nixon being forced out of office? I’ve always suspected that the Republicans have longed to destroy a Democratic President the way they believe the Democrats destroyed Nixon. Carter was too clean so they didn’t really try, but losing the impeachment battle with Bill Clinton must have really stuck in the elephant’s craw….

At Newsmax, Palin joins fellow conservatives with false, inflammatory attacks on Obama
    October 12, 2010 6:31 pm ET — 40 Comments

Sarah Palin used a webcast at the right-wing website Newsmax to use inflammatory language echoing that of fellow conservatives such as Glenn Beck and Newt Gingrich to attack President Obama and his policies. She also revived her long-debunked claim about “death panels” in the health care reform law.

Palin claims someone is “pulling [Obama’s] strings,” warns of Iran “Armageddon”
Palin smears Obama as “naïve,” claims “whomever it is who’s pulling his strings” won’t let him institute free-market principles. During Newsmax’s October 12 “Making America Great Again” webcast, Palin said that Obama’s policies “lean towards” being socialist, adding:

It’s the free-market system that built America, that allowed us to be so prosperous and safe and generous, that will work. But he won’t apply those principles because I think he’s quite naïve. I think he’s stubborn. I think whomever it is who’s pulling his strings will not let — because the ideology involved in all of this will get in the way — they will not let him admit what we know from history, that those free-market principles will certainly work better than socialism.

Palin: Nuclear Iran could lead to “Armageddon.” After describing Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as among “evil, evil dictators … evil men who would think that they are going to control America and make us fearful,” Palin said that “we have to show our steel spine and we have to tell them that, yes, military option will be on our table.” Palin added:

We need to remind Russia that any assistance given to Ahmedinejad — given to Iran — we have to realize that at the end of the day, a nuclear weapon in that country’s hands is not just Israel’s problem or America’s problem, it is the world’s problem. It could lead to an Armageddon. It could lead to that World War III that could decimate so much of this planet.

Palin: Sharia law will be “the downfall of America.” Palin said that “Americans will never stand for sharia law being the law of the land,” adding:

Whether it be just affecting a segment of the population, a demographic, certainly not in its entirety all over our country, Americans will not stand for this because Americans are smart enough to know Sharia law, if that were to be adopted — allowed to govern in our country, it will be the downfall of America. And too many Americans are onto this already and are starting to rise up and send that message to our federal officials and say, no, we will not put up with any hint of Sharia law being any sort of law of the land.

Palin: Obama “bows and kowtows and pokes our allies in the eye.” Later in the interview, Palin accused Obama of lacking “that humbleness where he can look back and see what has worked throughout history, what has failed, so that we can repeat the successes.” She also claimed that Obama “bows and kowtows and pokes our allies in the eye, which makes absolutely no sense.”

    Socialism?

“We used to hustle over the border for health care we received in Canada. And I think now, isn’t that ironic?” –Sarah Palin, admitting that her family used to get treatment in Canada’s single-payer health care system, despite having demonized such government-run programs as socialized medicine that will lead to death-panel-like rationing, March 6, 2010

“And Alaska — we’re set up, unlike other states in the union, where it’s collectively Alaskans own the resources. So we share in the wealth when the development of these resources occurs. … It’s to maximize benefits for Alaskans, not an individual company, not some multinational somewhere, but for Alaskans.” –Sarah Palin, explaining the windfall profits tax that she imposed on the oil industry in Alaska as a mechanism for ensuring that Alaskans “share in the wealth” generated by oil companies, New Yorker interview, Sept. 2008

Caruba: Obama’s Not Hitler, But …
    Topic: Accuracy in Media

In his Oct. 11 Accuracy in Media column, Alan Caruba plays the game of likening the Obama administration to the Nazis while denying he’s doing any such thing:

Time and again in these troubled and troubling times people make reference to Germany in the 1930s, the rise of the Third Reich, and to Hitler as they express their fears regarding the Obama administration.

It is an interesting comparison if only because it reveals a sense that an authoritarian government is poised to impose its dictates. This is highly unlikely if only because the forthcoming midterm elections give every indication of overturning any such ambitions by the present administration.

It is, for example, bleeding its top economic advisors, the former chief of staff to the President, the sudden resignation of the president’s national security advisor, and, most tellingly, virtually every Democrat running for office is running away from Obama’s legislative agenda.

Obama is hardly a Hitler and the Democrats are hardly Nazis. It’s a bad comparison.

I think what is at the heart of the comparison is the way, in just under two years, Americans witnessed the government takeover of the healthcare sector, one sixth of the economy, the takeover of General Motors and Chrysler to the benefit of the United Auto Workers and the loss of their creditors and bondholders, and a so-called stimulus package that by most accounts has wasted billions.

The general anxiety is bolstered by the stagnation of the job market and a widespread belief that Obama, Pelosi and Reid, along with the Democrats in Congress, have taken the nation in the wrong direction. Those familiar with history see the kind of conditions that existed in Germany in the 1930s that were the background for the rise of the Hitler and the Nazi Party. Hitler, however, was not massively abandoned by his supporters as Obama as been.

    […]

It took twelve years of Nazi rule and the reduction of Berlin to rubble for the usurpation of power to end on May 9, 1945. Compare that, then, with the Obama administration that began on January 20, 2009 followed by a swift loss of public support because of, not despite, its thuggish political effort to reshape the American model into a European socialist one.

Americans are just weeks away from “taking back” their nation from a man who hid or denied his real life from the voters to get elected on the basis of his oratorical skills and the stage managing of mass gatherings that were curiously reminiscent of Nazi rallies.

You gotta love how Caruba so blatantly contradicts himself. He’s too consumed with Obama-hate to take much care in keeping up the pretense.

This was not a joke video. I sent a personal message asking about the aunt’s age and this is what I got in reply:

We really have no proof of Zeituni’s age. I doubt she is only 58 years old, just going by her appearance she looks to be well into her 60’s. She did refer to Obama as “my child” more than once according to the interviewer, but, I posted the only time that it was included in the broadcast. The station did 3 separate broadcasts. which were all different, so all the other times she said it must have hit the cutting room floor. What starting me wondering about this is that Chris Matthews stated several times in a broadcast, that Obama’s mother was alive when he was running for President. By all accounts Stanley Ann died 15 years ago, so who was Matthews talking about? Obama has also said that his mother was the most religious person he has ever known-Stanley Ann was an atheist. After viewing 3 interviews of Zeituni, I realized, she is the most religious person that has appeared on the scene. Is it not possible that she gave birth to Obama, and then her half brother Obama Sr. gave the child to Stanley Ann to raise as her own?

  31. Jules says:

Of course, the new claims about Obama’s parentage are nonsense.

In fairness, though, I will note that there are some who seem to have an unhealthy obsession with Sarah Palin’s family and the medical details surrounding the birth of her youngest child. Andrew Sullivan, whose opinion I normally respect, has placed concern about the birth of Trig at the centre of his otherwise reasonable criticism of Sarah Palin. He bases his concern around some inconsistencies surrounding Sarah Palin’s account of Trigs birth, which can be explained in terms of a politician embellishing personal anecdotes. As politicians embellish anecdotes all the time and Ronald Reagan won praise for doing so about topics that actually mattered, I hardly think it noteworthy when Palin apparently does so about a matter that has no policy implications.

In fact, Sullivan has thrown his hat in with the proofers on grounds of transparency to a level that would allow him to demand the medical records relating to the birth of someone who will never be a candidate for public office.

Odder still, Sullivan has continued to defend his belief that Obama should release a certified photocopy of the original certificate on the basis that, “It is not my job as a journalist or yours as a citizen to take public officials on trust.” Never mind that any copy of a birth certificate, whether an abstract or a photocopy, is only trusted to be a birth certificate based on the word of the relevant public officials. It’s when you ignore the role of the certification of public officials that you start basing your beliefs on the “evidence” put forward by Orly Taitz of a supposed Kenyan certificate.
