In addition to the Melendres v. Arpaio lawsuit, there is another brought by the Department of Justice, and a bench trial in that case, Department of Justice v. Maricopa County is scheduled to begin August 10. I’ll let Stephen Lemons of the Phoenix New Times summarize what the suit is about:
…the DOJ complaint is much broader than Melendres, and covers Arpaio’s abuses of power, his retaliation against his critics, and ongoing discrimination against Spanish-speakers in county jails.
For more on what is charged by the DOJ, check out Lemons’ article: “Arpaio’s noose tightens: bench trial ordered in DOJ lawsuit.”

Perhaps this deserves a new thread (or perhaps I’m missing en existing one where I should have posted it!).

Wow. From the article:
“As detailed in the DOJ lawsuit, the MCSO’s unconstitutional activities run the gamut from the targeting of Latinos, to the violation of the rights of Spanish-speakers, to the illegal arrests of New Times’ founders in 2007, to the wrongful arrests of Arpaio critics at a county Board of Supervisors’ meeting in 2008 for “clapping,” to the illegal targeting and arrest of Phoenix civil rights activist Salvador Reza, to false charges brought by the MCSO against ex-Superior Court Judge Gary Donahoe, to the MCSO’s retaliation against former Supervisors Mary Rose Wilcox and Don Stapley, and so on.”
and
“Silver’s courtroom is just down the hall from Snow’s in the Sandra Day O’Connor U.S. Courthouse in downtown Phoenix. If hearings in the Melendres contempt case resume in time, Arpaio and his Chief Deputy could stroll from one trial involving their misconduct to another.”
I was thinking of writing an article called “Maricopa County’s Tar Baby: Joe Arpaio” but it seemed too much effort to recapitulate what has gone before. Interested readers can read many articles on the site that recount how much money Arpaio and his misconduct have cost the County. Most recently, Maricopa County objected to being added to the Melendres lawsuit as a defendant in place of the Sheriff’s office. They appealed to the Circuit Court, lost and are now appealing for their case to be heard en banc (by the entire circuit court). They already lost by a unanimous vote of the three judges that heard the appeal.
In this case, the County is also named as a defendant.
Arpaio’s CHICKANS… comin’ home ta ROOST!!!
I would rather say that Maricopa County voters’ chickens are coming home to roost.
You know what piles up under the roosting perch, right?
Hint: It seems to be getting deeper and deeper for Shurf Arpaio.
Indeed it does. It appears his reckless arrogance is finally catching up with him.
The New York Times now has the story:

Dr. Conspiracy: “Arpaio not quitting:”
Oh goody! That means he’ll get more and more desperate to “get” the judges. I’ll wager that before we hit July 4, he does a raid on Judge Snow’s home using trumped-up charges. He’s done it before, and he’s proven to be a creature of habit. 😀
“The Summer of Joe: Sheriff Arpaio’s court cases”
Pass the popcorn
it ends with:
Dear Patriot,
I’m going to cut right to the chase because I really need your help… You see, in the daily exercise of doing my job I am often targeted by groups that file legal actions against me for a variety of reasons.
Yeah, “a variety of reasons,” starting with: You’re a criminal.
