Most say Trump in the wrong on Birtherism

In addition to professional scientific polling, the YouGov organization conducts a series of daily polls through its “First Verdict” app. The results aren’t scientific because the sample is self-selected, made up of volunteers who downloaded the app, but the sample size is decent, sometimes over 4,000 responses. My perhaps biased impression is that the results of these polls are skewed a bit to the right compared to other results I see.

Today First Verdict presented this question:

Donald Trump has claimed that his questioning of the circumstances of Barack Obama’s birth was a public service because it forced the President to prove he was US born. Do you agree?

3,079 responses have been tallied. The results:

  • Yes, Donald Trump behaved properly throughout this controversy – 32%
  • No, Mr Trump wrongly fed the idea that Barack Obama’s presidency was illegitimate – 54%
  • Neither / Don’t know – 14%

In fact, President Obama proved his birthplace back in 2008 when he released his official birth certificate. The birther movement had largely gone dormant by 2011 until Trump stirred it up, leading to the release of Obama’s long form certificate, imaged by a machine that knows more about image compression than a birther, and the creation of the Cold Case Posse by Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Signed up on the app. Voted.

I think you may want a comma after “birther” at the end of your post.

  2. Sef says:

One could even argue that there never would have been a B/C controversy if the 2008 B/C had not been released. The naysayers would not have seen the shiny object to chase if this had not been brought to their attention.

  3. RanTalbott says:

Dave B.: Roger Stone just can’t quit birferin’.

More to the point, he says that Trump hasn’t:

He’s got real concerns here. I think the bottom line is he doesn’t know. He’s not sure. That’s not the same as ‘I’m certain the president was born either in Hawaii’ or ‘I’m certain that he was not.’

There’s going to be lots of fun watching his team try to tapdance around this. Mike Pence says “He brought that issue to an end this week”, not 5 years ago.

  4. Some have said as far as Trump “saying” what he must to clarify he is at least acknowledging Hawaii’s Officials in their Heath Department as Recording Obama’s birth in Hawaii is a bad thing.

Mr. Trump also recognized Obama as ‘Pres’ as consistently as he did in 2011. The video relates this exactly. Trump’s bewildered by why Obama waited 3 years and States in 2011 “when Hillary wanted it”

If the black caucus only acknowledges Obama’s Birth in Hawaii as the point of difficulty, Obama and Hillary have a tough point to sell now as far as Trump as a Birther who won’t acknowledge Hawaii Health Records.

This really only helps Trump, get more votes from that caucus. Look what happened.

How much is this attributed to Hillary’s Health Hazard and how much is attributed to the Birther Debate is not clear. Both dominated main Stream News coverage the last week.

The only revelation now that might hurt Trump is if Obama’s found not born in Hawaii by some new revelation. Then however Hillary’s hurt equally.

Trump has to my knowledge never admitted on camera ” inherited Citizenship from father and mother” were factors in the
    [natural born Citizen] Qualification.

If someone knows different please submit a link.

Politically, as I expressed Trump’s kept the safe door open by not calling Obama a [ natural born Citizen ] , so I also agree in there is no [natural born Citizen] qualified Obama but there is a DeFacto President.

Of course the technical points will be worked out after the Election when Policies collide with Principles in an achievement of an Agenda.
If Trump wants to lay waist to Obamacare he could do so after being Elected with the Executive Powers to investigate and crack open the safe in a hard Court case challenged with the full weight of the Justice Department.

A Trump (A.G.) attorney general could be assigned to do anything in the interest of legal dissemination which is what Obama fears most in his ” Legacy “.
The press has not pushed respect for Obama’s father ever on the Hawaii Birth Certificate. In fact, they push dis-honoring Obama’s father as hard as they can. This is a great holding point for Trump if he’s so inclined.

Trump’s got Options on this Principle is what I’m saying . He’s increasing his Black Caucus vote, and he’s still holding aces on Obama’s ill- legitimacy to Sign Law or as Hillary claims de-legitimacy

    Cody Robert Judy:
Trump’s bewildered by why Obama waited 3 years and States in 2011 “when Hillary wanted it”

President Obama, in an unprecedented action, released his birth certificate in 2008. Only birthers like ex-con Judy and Trump were not satisfied.

It is, of a course, a lie to suggest the Clinton wanted to see President Obama’s birth certificate, but peddling lies is second nature to ex-con Judy.

Politically, as I expressed Trump’s kept the safe door open by not calling Obama a [ natural born Citizen ] , so I also agree in there is no [natural born Citizen] qualified Obama but there is a DeFacto President.

Only birthers as dumb as ex-con Judy don’t understand that birth in the United States is sufficient for natural-born citizenship; even Trump is not that dumb.

  6. Phoenix says:

Trump, though, did make rumblings about Ted Cruz and his parents. And Cruz fired back about Trump’s mother being Scottish.

  7. bob says:

Phoenix: Trump, though, did make rumblings about Ted Cruz and his parents.

Trump, and a minority of respected scholars, did suggest that natural-born citizenship requires being born in the United States (which President Obama was). But none have adopted Donofrio’s two-citizen-parents fantasy, only which the ilk of ex-con Judy and Apuzzo have been trumpeting without success for the last eight years.

And Cruz fired back about Trump’s mother being Scottish.

I don’t think Cruz really believed that; I think Cruz was attempting to show Trump’s hypocrisy. Trump quickly countered that his mother, although born in Scotland, was a U.S. citizen at the time of his birth. (I would have enjoyed Cruz asking, “Where’s the naturalization certification?”)

  8. Phoenix says:

Bob, agreed about Cruz pointing out hypocrisy, and understood about the different stages/levels that “argument” about parents can take. I just don’t want to limit how hugely “dumb” certain individuals can make that issue, even as they often do so full-wittedly.

So much to unpack. As usual Cody spouts as holy writ stuff that he absolutely has no legitimate reason to believe. Recall Honest Abe’s wisdom that you’re guilty of falsehood if you proclaim as gospel something you don’t know for certain to be true, and that the accidental truth of your assertion doesn’t get you off the hook.
Though in Cody’s case, there is no accidental truth because …
There is nothing on the public record showing that Hillary ever demanded Obama’s BC, or that she ever referred to Obama’s “de-legitimacy.”
And Cody apparently buys into the fantasy that Trump will somehow produce the magic rabbit from the hat to show Obama ineligible after all, contrary to his recent acknowledgment, once Trump grabs the reins of power.
And any reverie that Trump will score higher than the mid-single digits with African-Americans is an even greater fantasy.

Ah well, plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose.

J.D. Reed: There is nothing on the public record showing that Hillary ever demanded Obama’s BC, or that she ever referred to Obama’s “de-legitimacy.”

That’s because Cody is an idiot. It’s like birthers who still claim that McCain was dragged before the senate by democrats and they made him show his birth certificate on the floor of congress despite this never happening.

    Thanks, Dr.

I try to keep abreast as events unfold, but I had never heard that McCain was literally forced to show his papers to the Senate.
To which Birther do we owe this phony report of high drama?

I’ve seen a bunch of new birthers on twitter claim that.

  13. Yes, many birthers believe that the Senate held hearings on McCain’s eligibility. A resolution declaring him eligible was sponsored by Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton! The resolution was discussed by the Senate Judiciary Committee in a closed business session along with other stuff, but there were no hearings.

Cody Robert Judy: If someone knows different please submit a link.

Normally, I do not reply to drivel, but your postings are so preposterous, I feel compelled to give several crucial links:

You are a convicted felon: “In a plea agreement with Utah County prosecutors, Judy, 27, entered guilty pleas to one count of aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony; one count of assault, a third-degree felony; and one count of escape, a class B misdemeanor.”

You spent 6.3 years in a maximum security prison on the above charges, which you voluntarily plead guilty to.

You are delusional: “Judy claimed God wants him to be the next prophet of the LDS Church. He said he received visions from God that predicted mass destruction, reinstitution of plural marriage and changes in the “Word of Wisdom,” a health code followed by Mormons. He also claims God ordered him to plead guilty and that God will deliver him from jail.”

When you talk to God, you are praying. When God talks to you, you are schizophrenic.

Dr. Conspiracy: Yes, many birthers believe that the Senate held hearings on McCain’s eligibility.

One of them is Gallups, who often says he “only wants the Senate to give Obama the same scrutiny they gave McCain”. He’ll probably die without realizing that his wish had been granted 😉

  17. Curious George says:

    Dr. C.:

“…and the creation of the Cold Case Posse by Sheriff Joe Arpaio.”

Incorporation papers filed with the state of Arizona show that the Cold Case Posse was established several years prior to the beginning of their birth certificate investigation.

    Ran Talbott:

“One of them is Gallups, who often says he “only wants the Senate to give Obama the same scrutiny they gave McCain”. He’ll probably die without realizing that his wish had been granted ”

Not only did the Senate Judiciary Committee review information back in 2008 about John McCain, they also reviewed information about Barry Goldwater and Barack Obama. All three men were considered eligible. Gallups is such a complete Birther ignoramus. Gallups continues to assert that Senate Resolution 511 is the law of the land. It’s not. How can Gallups be so completely misinformed?

  18. RanTalbott says:

Curious George: Not only did the Senate Judiciary Committee review information back in 2008 about John McCain, they also reviewed information about Barry Goldwater and Barack Obama.

Interesting: when I reading “no hearings”, I assumed that it meant they had passed it out of committee without bothering to discuss it at all. Like, say, “It is the sense of the Senate that puppies and kittens are cute”.

Do you have a link to a description of what they actually did? If so, please post it. Thanks.

Good point about the CCP: most of us (including me) tend to use the name to refer to the “task force” that Arpaio set up within it to do the publicity stuntinvestigation.

  19. bob says:

    Curious George:
How can Gallups be so completely misinformed?

Gallups has been repeatedly informed that he’s wrong about S.R. 511; he doesn’t care. Gallups has an agenda to push, the truth be damned.
