You may recall that Wayne Allyn Root (vice presidential candidate for the Libertarian Party) caused some stir in the Birther universe when he said that he never met Barack Obama at Columbia University, even though they were both Political Science majors there at the same time. Root’s remarks about his lack of memory of Obama were latched onto by the birthers as evidence that Obama was never a student at Columbia (despite the clear evidence that he graduated from there).
Root, however, in a newly published article at the Obama Ballot Challenge web site, titled “Obama is 100% Red, White & Blue American Born” says that he has no doubts that Obama was born in the USA and attended Columbia. He attributes not meeting Obama to something else:
Where was he hiding for those Columbia years? My educated guess is he was smoking pot and attending communist meetings, plotting the downfall of America and capitalism. Don’t laugh, it worked!
Root doesn’t claim that Obama was foreign born, but that he pretended to be in order to get into the prestigious Columbia (and probably Occidental and Harvard). Speculation based on no evidence whatever is not what I would label an “educated guess” but then I don’t have a political science degree from a prestigious university like Columbia. Root ignores various newspaper interviews where Obama (at Harvard) talks about being born in Hawaii, putting to lie the idea that he was promoting himself as Kenyan Born to his prospective book publicist.
Root writes:
His college records were his Achilles heel. He had to hide his tracks. His college records had to be sealed forever. Not because he was a foreigner and unqualified to be President, but because he was an American posing as a foreigner. That makes him a fraud unqualified to be President.
Of course, Obama’s college records are only sealed because US law makes education records private for everyone. Obama has never taken any action to seal such records. Root goes on at length to spin a yarn of conspiracy in the article, which the interested reader may read on their own.
Conspiracy theorist, yes, but apparently Wayne Allyn Root is not a birther.
Since he has zero basis for this claim, I suppose this is just the birther in him trying to rile up his fellow wingnuts.
First, they can have another round of “Obama got to him”.
Second, they can tie this to another imagined OMG moment, as in “this means College records showing Obama as foreign student will surface soon, so the regime is creating an ‘explanation’ in advance”.
I don’t think Root has any motive for such a claim other than those described above. Why would he make up something that would be beneficial to Obama (from the birther viewpoint), yet not openly renounce birtherism as crap if distancing himself from them was his intention?
I just read that article – partly – and looked through the comments. Some very brave guys are trying to bring a little sanity there. But most of the comments are disgusting in such a way that I have promised myself to stop lurking there. Hope I will succeed.
I’ve never seen Wayne Allyn Root’s college records. They’re obviously sealed therefore because Obama didn’t see Wayne Root and because Root operated under an alias Wayne Alan Root; Root must have been busy doing crystal meth and attending neo nazi skinhead meetings. I don’t have any proof of this per say but there can’t be any other explanation.

I’m thinking of writing to Columbia and ask for Root’s college records. I’m pretty sure that I know what Columbia’s response will be.
I went to the same university at the same time as Paula Abdul, and I don’t remember one person ever pointing her out or saying, “See her? She’s going to be on American Idol someday!”
Everybody knows that Root has spent millions of dollars to seal his personal records.
Perhaps Root’s memory loss is due to HIS pot smoking.

It is impossible to attend school in the U.S. as a foreign student without an F-1 Student Visa. You can’t get into the country or be accepted for admission, let alone receive financial aid.
No F-1 Student Visa was ever issued to Barack Obama, II.
Root is just upset that his ‘classmate’ became successful whil he himself well,… we have seen it…

One of his slides says: “Both rules of citizenship [jus soli and jus sanguinis] became engrained in English Common Law by the time of the Founding.” From what I have read, most authorities would not agree with this statement. Both rules were in effect (creating natural born citizens) at the time of the Founding no doubt, but most authorities would say that only jus soli was part of the Common Law, the other being statutory law.
I’ll let him know, doc. Maybe he’ll come over here for some follow-up. 🙂
The ultimate rule of U.S. v. Wong Kim Ark was that Wong Kim Ark was a citizen of the United States, because he was born in the United States, and that was the English Common Law from the founding of this country.
Also, he has a few slides on dual citizen. I doubt that he’d agree that the United States gave up sovereignity on who they declare as citizens, so why would they care who other states declare as citizens?

If that was the case, they wouldn’t have thought that there was a need to pass the Naturalization Act of 1790…which was to recognize jus sanguinis. So, obviously, a large number of the signers of the Constitution thought it wasn’t covered.
Root previously said Obama lost his citizenship.

Of course the President’s college records are “sealed,” just as mine are. I know I’ve spent … nothing … (oops, I mean millions!!!) to seal them.
It’s also not surprising (except to Wayne Allyn Root) that he wouldn’t remember having met Obama at Columbia. Really, how many people do you remember from your college days? I remember a few people I was close to, a couple of fellow students, some of my professors, but even among those in my fairly small major, not a lot of others, let alone in the college at large. He actually attended Princeton with Ted Cruz, but had no memory of him. His wife did, but mainly not a complimentary memory. Apparently Ted was a major league asshole even then, hence his “memorability.” Most of the “nice people” aren’t quite as memorable.
I was at the University of Washington in 1961-2 when Obama’s mother Stanley Ann Dunham was there, with baby Barack, but I don’t recall meeting her, although I suspect we both were at the on-campus appearances of President John Kennedy and the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., who each gave speeches there in November, 1961. No doubt they were there to boost the budding Obama-for-President conspiracy.
